Zippered vs. Non-Zippered Garments

One of the most common questions we get is, “What is the difference between a zippered and non-zippered compression garment?”

This is a great question and I’d like to explain the benefits for both styles and the appropriate time to use them.

Zippered garments:

A medical compression garment is applied to a patient immediately following liposuction or a tummy tuck.  Typically, the patient is still sedated and unconscious.  It is applied by the operating room staff assisting the doctor.

This is not an easy task.

Zippers allow the garment to be completely separated – an important detail when trying to move an unconscious person around on an operating table.  Fully separating the garment allows the O.R. staff to gently apply the garment, by zipping the patient in, rather than aggressively pulling on a garment without zippers.

Additionally, since the body will naturally swell with fluid during the first 5 to 10 days after a procedure, the zippered garment is sized to accommodate the additional fluid.

And finally, zippers make the garment easier to put on and take off, a very important feature to a patient that is still sore.

Non-Zippered garments:

In the second or third week, the patient’s swelling and tenderness begins to subside.  At this point, I highly recommended switching to a non-zippered garment.

Non-zippered garments are cut to shape and mold tissue into the ideal hourglass or “V” shape forms.  The garments are cut a bit smaller and have additional compression panels to assist in adhering skin and tissue to the body’s new contours.

After your aesthetic or reconstructive procedure, using both a zippered and a non-zippered garment will always get you the best possible results from you procedure.
